Is Deegan Original? I Don't Know, But This Campaign Isn't

darkmane-myspace.jpg

From YouTube channel: "Brian Deegan is becoming more of an X Games icon every day, and you know we can't have that! Must...smash...originality!!!"

See MySpace (turn volume down).

See funnier take on the "Must--destroy--[awesome thing]!" shtick.

No, Cinnamon Sticks are Not Made of Sweet 'N Low.

sweet-n-low-light-my-fire.jpg

Healthy Food Brands is reintroducing the Sweet 'N Low candy line. Chadwick Communications was selected to spread the word, so it created a print ad campaign that I guess makes the candy look low-fat yet saucy.

"Light my fire" is at left, and here's "Get off my cloud."

"Sweetened with isomalt and acesulfame potassium." LOL.

Scare Tactics Used to Talk You Onto GM's Used Car Lot

used-car-ambush.jpg

"There's great confusion among consumers about what constitutes a certified used vehicle," preaches director Mark Mathews of GM's Used-Vehicle Activities, eyes wild with foreboding.*

"Manufacturer certified vehicles offer new-vehicle-like benefits and financing options where others do not; private sellers being the most risky option."

If you're not sufficiently flooded with self-doubt, go get ambushed. Fear monger of choice: Mullen.

Bayer Saves Babies, Clooney Goofs, Nike Stabs Air, Sex Tracked

- Bayer roasts babies over a fire but, of course, they, like those famous Puma ads, are not real and the brand has stated they, nor JWT, had anything to do with their creation.

- That Churchill pet insurance dog, in a recent commercial, seems to say, rather than his usual cathphrase "Oh yes," "Oh yes, fuck!" You decide.

- A mustached George Clooney does the goofy European commercial thing.

- In the UK, Nike has stopped selling its Mike Air Stab trainer after an upswing in knife murders.

Get Your War On Invades Online Video!

get-your-war-on.jpg

Get Your War On, the satirical anti-war comic series by David Rees, is turning into an online video series. See the preview at 236.com, where it will air exclusively.

The "video strip" will be put together by Flat Black Films, which did Waking Life and those Charles Schwab ads that I liked but everyone else hated.

Because Acrobats Should Bring Infiniti to Mind.

infiniti-cirque.jpg

To promote Infiniti's Cirque de Soleil sponsorship, TBWA/Toronto created "Double Lines," which smoothly integrates mid-air performance with roadside performance.

Apt tagline: "Let the performance begin." I've got no complaints.

Ford, 'Entertainment Weekly' Hook Up For Susan Komen Promotion

Cranberry_TShirt_Felicia.jpg

Ford has teamed with Entertainment Weekly to extend its sponsorship of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure with a new Warriors in Pinks t-shirt and a chance to win one of four limited edition Zune 30GB music players donated by Microsoft. heck it our at fordcares.com.

Ooo...there's so much feel-good goodness here, crassly commenting on the curvaceous hotness of the t-shirt model would bring things down a bit don't you think?

Ageny's 'Mad Men'-Style Website Shows Love For Good 'Ol Days

red_tettmer_mad_men.jpg

Way to get publicity, Red Tettemer! The Philadelphia agency is showing its love for AMC's Mad Men - which premieres its second season this Sunday, July 27 at 10PM - by redesigning its website to look like the 60's-based TV show. Drinking! Smoking! Sexism! Adultery! Cone-shaped boobs! What's not to love? Oops...wrong decade. Sorry about that.

Country Music Artist Ashlee Hewitt Gets Mike Hard

ashlee_hewitt.ajpg.jpg

Mike's Hard Lemonade is hard up for some social and consumer generated media action having gone down the road of the personalized fake newscast which, like, everyone is doing to the point of absolute boredom. So it's very likely Mike is really really hard right now for Nashville Star contestant Ashlee Hewitt who, on her own we are assured, has written a song about Mike's Hard Lemonade and how a group of girls used to come into a bar she worked at and ordered Mike's Hard Lemonade.

Hmm. And here I thought only rap artists embedded brands in there music. Of course that could simply be because I never listen to country music. Anyway, here it is. Be happy for Mike and his Hard...Lemonade.

Mad Men: An Exception to the Diversity Onslaught?

Mad_Men_Negro.jpg

Yesterday I read an article on JAMZ about Mad Men and how diversity advocates might threaten the show's authenticity. The author called Mad Men un-nostalgic and a "world where white men were kings." In what appears to be a reasonable justification to crystallize Mad Men as its own white male ecosystem, the author concludes:

Everyone is smoking, drinking, closeted, desperately unhappy. Choices and options are limited. That's the fabric that holds 'Mad Men' together. To suddenly throw in a little diversity would rip it to shreds.

I get the dude. It would be unrealistic to pepper those executive suits with black and brown faces for the sake of the PC police.

But it's also dangerous to use Mad Men as an excuse to shut diversity out -- something agencies are still too good at. That's gratuitous and unrealistically romantic. There's plenty of room to broaden Mad Men's scope without harming its precious and purported authenticity.

Saatchi's 'The Breakfast Club' A 'Mean Girls' Failed 'Fetch'

jcpenney_breakfast_club.jpg

Saatchi & Saatchi's The Breakfast Club campaign for JCPenney has been crapped by everyone on since it launched. Today, it's Rebecca Cullers' turn. On AdFreak, Rebecca does the math, writing, "I was 3 years old when The Breakfast Club came out in 1985. I didn't know the film existed until I was in college, where it was included in a class on culturally significant movies for Gen X. Now, there's more or less a decade separating me from today's incoming high-school students. Does anyone really think they will get the reference?"

She is absolutely correct in her analysis of the problem and for anyone at Saatchi or JCPenney not to have realized this is further confirmation far too many advertisers and their agencies, despite believing the contrary, are completely out of touch with reality.

Glamour Stiletto Run Travels to Moscow. Hotness Abounds

glamour_stiletto_run_2008c.jpg

A couple years ago, we covered Glamour's Stiletto Run, a promotional event highlighting the launch of Dutch Glamour at which hundreds of women wearing heels ran a 75 meter sprint to win $10,000 Euros.

Last year the event was held in Amsterdam. We missed it but this year, just this week, it was held in Moscow and while a member of our vast Adrants reporting staff wasn't in attendance to capture the event first hand, thanks to Flickr, we can share all the glamorous, high heeled hotness with you today.

Islam is Cool. By the Way, Here's a Wife.

shaadi-prince-charming.jpg

Hoping to expand your nuptial smorgasbord? Add Shaadi to your list -- which, if you've been paying attention, should already include Russians, Filipinos and good white-bread Christian girls.

Shaadi is a conservative Indian "matrimonial" site, which I guess is less obnoxious than Filipina Heart's more overt cattle call. I found the ad alongside an article titled "Ad campaign promoting Islam angers NY lawmaker." Dude, that is some seriously misguided contextual action.

Hey Look, a Motorcycle Show.

sons-of-anarchy.jpg

Here's a really long trailer for Sons of Anarchy, a gritty FX man-drama about motorcycle clubs and the families that send the burly soldiers yonder.

What you can expect: emotional outbursts, a Molotov cocktail or two, some girl-punches and a swastika. And you thought Mad Men was real!

The ad was built in-house, with a heightened sense of melodrama brought to you by PrimalScream Music, which composed The Dream We Left Behind especially for the show.

Just Another Sad Chick Who Thinks Sex Will Save Puppies

Subject Line: How Sex with Brad Garrett Can Save Puppies!

Body: This is hilarious! You got to see it. Regina Russell partners with us at The Humane Society of the United States from time to time and oh man is the video a riot! She is one creative gal producing this video!

Homegirl's not that funny. Though I can see how the scene with the bear and the cigarette might elicit a hoarse guffaw.

Get Diverse During Advertising Week With Recruitment Program

adex_2008.jpg

During Advertising Week, Adrants and the Business Development Institute will be hosting its second annual ADEx: The Advertising Industry Experienced Hire Diversity Recruiting Program. Yes, we know it's a mouthful but its purpose is really simple: to bring recruiters and and experience advertising professionals together. Although all, of course, are welcome to apply, our focus is on diverse candidates including those with minority backgrounds, women, and GLBT.

There's lots of opportunities for job seekers as well as employers (remember how poorly you were represented a couple weeks ago. Here's a chance to rectify that a bit. Check out all the details here.

Shoot! the Day Brings Stock Photo Angst to the Fore

shoot-the-day-thumb.jpg

On Sunday I moderated an ad agency panel for Shoot! the Day, a day-long photographer conference put together by PhotoShelter.

A few things I picked up amidst coleslaw mountains and sassy stock:

  • ADs and art buyers depend pretty heavily on stock photography, but feel like they've seen everything the industry has to offer -- including its paltry selection of models. "It's become a running joke," said Molly Aaker of Unit7. "'There's that same girl, except with her hair up!'"

  • Diversity is an issue, but it can't be solved just by changing the color of people's faces. Belinda Lopez of StrawberryFrog wants to see more "documentary-style" imagery -- people in natural poses, expressing real emotions, and doing things a person in that situation and/or of that ethnicity is likely to do.

  • Everybody seems crazy about PhotoShelter -- which is probably why they attended the first annual Shoot! the Day in the first place.

This is Not an Ad For Apple

macunblogged_girl.jpg

This is not an ad for Apple. Apple doesn't do racy ads. Apple doesn't believe sex sells. Nope. This is not an ad for Apple. Apple prefers hipsteresque silhouettes and white space. Industrial design and witty repartee. Tiny envelopes and bloviated PC guys. This is not an ad for Apple.

We're more likely to see Steve Jobs himself appear in an Apple ad than some cutie in black lingerie lounging on a white couch. No, this is not an ad for Apple. It is, however, an ad for MacUnblogged. Sort of.

You've got to love a brand that motivates people to photograph themselves - or hot models - with the brand's products.

Next Time You're in Quicksand, Lie Still. (Thanks, Samsung!)

yawning-bear.jpg

Test Your Instincts is a free (brought to you by Samsung Instinct!) quiz that gauges a person's wildlife savvy: what do you do when a jellyfish stings, when a shark comes angling for your surfboard, or when you're stuck in quicksand (which happens to me all the time)?

The scenarios are wordy, but you'll at least learn something* and there's no registration process. I fared pretty terribly. Oddly, the answers I did know were mostly culled from Captain Planet.

British Royal Zara Phillips Continues Work With Land Rover

zara_phillips_land_rover.jpg

As a follow up to its original rugby film, Land Rover is out with another which debuted mid-July and has, again, tapped British royalty to appear in the video. In the new video, the goofy rugby lover puts his smarmy moves on Zara Phillips, the eldest granddaughter of Queen Elizabeth II. Phillips, an equestrienne Eventing World Champion is seen taking her horse out of its trailer while the goofy dude tries to explain to Phillips, who, apparently, he doesn't know, how simple horse rising is. Philips just smiles but the horse doesn't take too kindly to the dude's smarm.

In late 2006, Phillips appeared in a print ad for Land Rover wearing a gown covered in mud with the headline, "Beautifuly Poised." The Queen wasn't all that happy about her appearing in the ad but perhaps she's had a chance to get used to Phillip's more "real world" endeavors.

Yawn. Lions Yawn. Dead Antelope Dances. Yes, It's A Samsung Ad!

samsung_singing_lions.jpg

To some, yawning lions who break into song could be interpreted as funny, amusing or even entertaining. Even a half-eaten dead antelope who gets up and dances could cause a giggle. Thankfully for those who don't find this sort of thing amusing, this Samsung video promoting the NV24HD only lasts 1:19. For the rest of the story (as some old news dude used to say), a visit to seethewholestory.com will give you the details on the new camera.

Social media firm Votigo partnered with L'Oreal to promote its Shue Uemura Art of Hair Product Line.

The result: what else? -- UGC! A style challenge, to be exact. Go do somebody's hair and take a picture. Be sure to claim you used an Art of Hair product.

Entrants will be graded, in part by their peers, based on artistic approach, technical difficulty and stylist's pick. The winner gets a trip to Tokyo.

Shoot My Blog's Game Plan Could Use a Little Something Extra

shoot-my-blog-books.jpg

Renaud, the author of Shoot My Blog, asked a bunch of other bloggers (including us; we declined) to shoot a digital photo of something with his blog in the background. Here are the results.

It's cool that he got a bunch of people to go out of their way and do this for him, but what's it all for? Like Paris Hilton circa 2006, the blog apparently only exists to be photographed. You wanna put an ad on that bad-boy or what?

Lotus Won't Just Fit You with Features; You'll Get a Little Character, Too

faceless-people.jpg

Check out Faceless People, for which a bunch of, well, faceless people appear in high-profile places all over England.

By wading through a sea of faceless folk on FacelessPeople.com, you can read up on the specs for the new Lotus Evora. Tagline: "True character in a faceless world."

Diggin' the creepy guerrilla effort (imagine getting on the bus and sitting next to somebody WITHOUT A FACE!), but I also think it's pretty bitchy to claim to have a premium on character. (Why spend $80K for character when a jagged scar does it for free?) Thanks to Adrants reader Tom Quinn for sending this over.

You Mean the World's Not Flat in Vista-ville?

windows_earth_flat_ad.png

Looks like CP+B's finally doing something with the $300 million in ad money Microsoft gave it. The divine task: reposition Vista.

"Vista is now actually better than its reputation. That's a marketing issue," observed Tim Anderson of the ailing OS -- which, to be fair, was getting panned even before it went live. (Warts and all.)

One of the new ads, at left, reads, "At one point, everyone thought the Earth was flat. Get the facts about Windows Vista." Clicking on that brings you to this page, which in part reads:

When Windows Vista debuted in January 2007, we declared it the best operating system we had ever made. "Windows Vista is beautiful," The New York Times raved. It's humbling that millions of you agree.

But we know a few of you were disappointed by your early encounter. Printers didn't work. Games felt sluggish. You told us--loudly at times--that the latest Windows wasn't always living up to your high expectations for a Microsoft product.

Well, we've been taking notes and addressing issues.

That's charming. Touching, even. But do they mean it? And what happens now?
