Hummer Street Art Gets Defaced

<hummer_defaced.gif

Earlier this month we pointed out some Tats Cru, Inc. street art that GM commissioned to promote its new Hummer H3, the small man's hummer. Predictably, the art has been defaced as noted by flicker user Irena Tejaratchi who took this image including the phrases, "sell out, "no blood for oil," "sham" and "dummer." While GM might not like their brand defaced, they knew what they were getting into and they most likely figured they'd get a bunch of press, too, which they have.

It looks good defaced. Almost like it was done intentionally by a pro.

The hummer 'art' has shown up on Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles. Let's see how long it lasts here.

Thats right motherfuckers. Those damned wannabe bullshit ads should get the white paint and roller treatment. I guess graf is ok if its used to sell your fucking bullshit! Fuck YOU!!!! Its very insulting to say that grafitti is criminal and use our style and culture to try to sell us products that we hate and much of our art is against. Those ads should be dfaced in the same style that our art is removed from walls, see how they fucking feel. Again, FUCK YOU mother fuckers!

Something tells me allab is spraying on his screen just as much as he is spraying on the walls...

Allab. As a graffer myself, I just want to ad- shut it.

hey allab, how would you like it if i threw my feces on your window? is that authentic and subversive enough for you? who are you kidding... all graffiti communicates/sells a message/product... all graffiti is subject to the residue and evolution of the city... the only fundamental difference between the hummer graffiti and yours is that yours illegal occupies the space within which it is contained... unless of course you are bombing public (govt/state/county/city/village owned) property in an area you pay taxes or property that your own...

I knew it was gonna last long. Especially in Willy B. Keep in mind this was not defaced by another graffiti writer but most likely an angry cyclist. Steve forgot to mention it says BIKE real big on the piece. Tats cru is def. a talented bunch and has mad street cred from all the bombs they've thrown, however, I knew this piece would be a prime target, and regardless of their past history, no one would respect this piece.

When graffiti is posted out in public, it is no longer just "your" culture. Put it in a public space and it isn't your private little affair anymore. The part that makes graf criminal is the trespassing and damage to property, not the "style" per se. Ad space is paid placement, whether arrogant graf artists (vandals) think it looks like it or not. When you deface an ad, you are damaging a paid placement. You mistakenly think you're going to hurt a brand to which you are really only calling more attention. Arrogant and ignorant graf artists / vandals act as though they have the right to paint whatever kind of message they like, wherever they see fit, without permission - this is, in plain fact, criminal.
