Tom Cruise Movie Promotes Scientology

While we're all for co-marketing, marketing tie-ins and other forms of mutual backscratching, an Adrants informant points out the striking similarities between Tom Cruise's War of the World movie poster and Tom Cruise's...uh...we mean L. Ron Hubbard's book about Scientology. Coincidence or subtle bully pulpitting?

Or someone is just a big Michael Crichton fan.

Wrong book, guys. The right one is one of L. Ron's sci-fi novels, ala BATTLEFIELD EARTH. The cover looks exactly the same as the WAR OF THE WORLDS poster. Creepy indeed.

Im just not seeing the similarity between a volcano erupting and a planet being gripped by an alien 'hand'

if the fact that there are flames and the color red in both is enough then you can pretty much draw a comparison to any two summer blockbuster-style movie posters.

Actually, it is more like the opening for the TV series from '88 (yes, i am geek). http://www.war-ofthe-worlds.co.uk/eye.htm

and, uh, considering that the original work was penned by L. Ron Hubbard, and that Cruise is a scientologist... are you really that surprised?

The original work is by H.G. Wells - not L. Ron Hubbard. Wonder if Stphen King or James Patterson are looking to start a MADE UP religion when they are no longer able to write good books.

Crazy stuff.

Not to mention that the Mission Earth series was written as satire and has absolutley nothing to do with Scientology whatsoever. Not very good satire either.

Hey, I know summer time is usually a slow news time but c'mon. The two do not look alike, other than the use of flame and a dark backdrop. Unless, you guys are scientologists and this is just a clever ploy to make us think about Dianetics. Hm. Very clever. But alas you cannot fool me so easily! Back, vile cultists! BACK!
