Wordologist Creates Rap For BluBlocker Sunglasses

dr_geek.jpg

Sometimes the ideas just don't flow when you're trying to come up with a really cool campaign for a product as mundane as sunglasses. Apparently BluBlocker had that problem and hit the streets in search of someone who could do the job their creatives couldn't. Apparently, wordologist Dr. Geek was hanging around Venice Beach, was approached by a BluBlocker employee who gave him a pair of the glasses and came up with a rap for the glasses which, after viewing, you'll have one of the following reactions: barf and bow your head in shameful realization you work in the same industry from which this work emanated or let out a big, "Dude, this shit rocks. We gotta tap some of that bad ass mofo juice for our next campaign."

I think we're so obsessed with selling ideas to the client and winning awards, as an industry, that we don't spend enough time actually trying to sell to customers. We took a quick poll and most people here remember the old blue blocker ads from a decade ago. That can't be said for most of the slick crap that gets produced. For a product that doesn't have the budgets of say a Coke or an Oakley - this is incredibly effective. Most consumers aren't guggi wearing hipsters and aren't looking for foppish artistic subtext. I think this is wicked, and David Hassellhoff will fight anyone who disagrees.

I'm also in love with the Head On ads. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XAFCRT9L7A
Because people remember it. Who says inhouse creative doesn't work?

This clip is at least 10 years old. It was from an infomercial that was running in the mid 90's, if not before.

I'm with Gordon. This isn't new. I remember this guy on my TV years ago. Why is it back?

In fact, according to Dr. Geek's website:

"One accomplishment that gave the versifier his greatest visibility to the public is the Blublocker
Sunglasses’ infomercial, Dr. Geek made up a rhyme unrehearsed and sold 20 million pairs of Blublockers from September 1990 to January 1997. Years later, people not only in America, but Canada, New Zealand, and Australia stills [sic] recognize Dr. Geek."
