New Ideas Exist In the Smallest Places

melvin_card.jpg

It seems there may actually be some new ideas left in the ad business though we're sure someone will tell us this has been done before. Anyway, Michael Shostack tells us graphic designer Jeni Mattson created some very cool business cards for, apparently, another designer. The concept was to illustrate the designer's probing nature so Jeni designed a metal business card made up of actual lock picking tools. Hey, it's diferent. That's half the battle.

Is this really a great idea? Just seems totally gimmicky to me. That's a business card that's working way too hard for your attention.

Kevin Mitnick's business cards looks similar, but
not identical. Who was there first?

oh, for god's sake, get roooool.

Different is NOT half the battle.

As the late great Leo Burnett (well I hope he's dead
on account of they buried him fifty years ago) would
say: if you just want to be different for different's sake,
come down to breakfast with you sock on your head.

Also, though, it seems almost incredibly intelligent
by today's standards, it was also Leo (he of the
bowl of apples for anyone to help themselves to -
remember when Advertising wasn't a stech in the
nostrils - oh where was ) who said that the mark
of a great advertisement was that the the public
rather than saying what a gread ad said what a great
product.

Goodness, how quaint.

Actually Leo has lots of really pertinent intelligent
comments on great advertising. But I fear me if I
spoke them outloud, I'd get stonedl

Both Melvin's and Kevin Mitnick's card were designed by the same person. Kevin asked Melvin for permission to use the design before hiring the same designer to do his card.
How do I know this? I was married to her and did the typesetting for both cards.
