Where's My Jetpack has a bit of fun with Presidential hopeful Barak Obama and his supposed smoking habit. James Carville "chimes in" with an analysis of Obama's chances based on the country's regional smoking preferences. A Philip Morris exec has a good laugh. And Underworld Marketing Social Media Strategist "Lou Cipher" says Obama will be screwed if he lights up predicting a picture of the event will spread acros the Internet within an hour. Hey, it's Friday.

As a non-American it seems that US elections are exceedingly image-concious. Is this really the case? Does the American electorate really choose its leaders based upon such puerile topics as whether they smoke or not?

Yes, we are that image conscious. We will even choose leaders based on their blockbuster status as action heroes. (Arnold.) We will kick a candidate to the curb if he emits a weird scream in Iowa (Dean.) We will quickly closet a man who botches a joke (Kerry) and we will openly laugh at a Presdident who appears on an aircraft carrier in a flight suit. Our politics is far more theatre than it is substantative debate.
And here, the anti-smoking Nazis would easily make an issue of a candidate's smoking habit. "How can a man who makes such poor decisions regarding his own health be trusted to make good decisions for our nation?" is how the argument would go.

I only ask because we're witnessign a worrying shift in the same direction over here - Tony "I can't tell the truth" Blair's stay in Number 10 has been a catalogue of image-over-substance issues.

Every liberal I have ever met hated smoking to the point that they would call the law if you smoked near them. With all of them swooning and climaxing over him it's a shame he doesn't fire one up on the stage at a rally. Talk about health of candidates? Obama is a real deciever.
