Some Feel DDB Berlin Copied Idea For VW Frog Ad, Want Apology

vw_golf_tsi.jpg

Some time ago, Danish comedians Wulffmorgenthaler created a comic strip that showed a frog being carried away by a fly stuck to his tongue. Earlier this year, DDB Berlin let loose a Volkswagen commercial that showed yes, frog being carried away by a fly stuck to his tongue. The usual pissing match has ensued. Some think DDB should apologize. See the strip here. Watch the ad here. What do you think?

Absolutely not. Unless someone at DDB admits they saw the strip, there's no reason to think that two people couldn't come up with the same riff on such a classic scene from our world.

Quit bitching. Your comic wasn't even funny.

A fly lifting a frog out of the water by it’s tongue ... A "situation" people would JUST come up with? NOT!

This is so surreal and the connection is obvious.

Absolutely yes.

It's a small world people get the same ideas. Specially a frog hanging on to a fly. Come on here! It's blatant. They were clearly inspired by the strip. Cool to see people backing the comedians. Bloggers like those two guys at LashleyWorld will do some serious damage to the image of DDB, if they don't respond in some way. That strip is viewed by more than 500.000 people each month. Most of them are directed over to the blog, where they are mocking DDB! I think it is dangerous to underestimate the power of the blogosphere.

Sure looks to me like the ad lifted the idea from the strip. But then, maybe the comic strip lifted it from somewhere else. And you can't really prove either assertion, can you? As the author of the book of Ecclesiastes said 2,000 years ago, "there is nothing new under the sun."
