Blatherific Agency Founder Gets YouTube Spoofing

cahan_associates.jpg

Cahan Associates Founder Bill Cahan who, in a video on his agency's site and on YouTube, says he's concerned about the video featuring just him but them proceeds to feature just himself in the video. In oh-so-tired, oh-so-overdone close crop, shaky camera, ego-centric style, the video goes on in wondrously blatherific style explaining how the agency wants people/clients whose hearts beat a little faster, whose palms are sweaty and who are not quite sure what they are going to get. Now that sounds like a smart client doesn't it? Anyway, Cahan says he's not going to use buzzwords and then, yes, proceeds to use them.

The whole thing is begging to be spoofed and in try YouTube generation style, it has been. Twice. Here and here. They're not all that good but they're still funny. That said (oops...sorry...that's one of "those words") the agency's site is clean, simple and does cause one to be a bit more curious about the agency over others whose Flashturbation sites frustrate and bore.

"people/clients whose hearts beat a little faster, whose palms are sweaty and who are not quite sure what they are going to get" sounds like a bunch of drug addicts to me!

If there's one thing I've absolutely had it with in our industry it's egomania. Just because someone pays for millions of people to see the work we - anyone in the industry - did for the client, doesn't mean that it's amazing, or worth talking about, or anyone cares. It just means that someone paid to stick it out there. We're not saving the human race, we're shilling shit with goofy entertainment and artsy fartsy design that most people couldn't give a fuck about.

Do your work well and take pride in that work, yes - sell yourself to new clients, yes - but in general, there are so many inflated heads out there it makes me ill, because at most of the inflated heads are "good" at what they do - not great - just incredibly competent, which is what most clients need and pay for. In many cases, greatness is luck, otherwise it's probably retired on a beach and writing books, reluctantly doing interviews or trying to actually do something meaningful with their life. God knows shilling Tylenol and Tampons doesn't make the next alexander. Call a spade a spade.

Anyone think the spoofs are a part of the campaign?

I can assure you they are not. :)

I guarantee that if any of you picked up even 2 of his annual reports randomly, you would vomit at the brilliance.

As a designer, I have nothing but respect for his vision, and he is a total master at designer/client relations.

Plus the audience is (presumably) the client.
