WW II Flag Raising Used to Sell Luxury Jets

LuxAirJets.gif

Perhaps, in reaction to a luxury jet company using the famed WW II flag image, said it best, writing, "Freedom Honor Integrity. The Freedom to use one of the most revered (and rights-free!) photos in history to sell, yes, trips on a luxury jet. The Honor to use six WWII soldiers--three of whom were later killed in the battle of Iwo Jima--to hoist your sales. The Integrity to...oh fuck it. I am not a patriotic man. I do not "love" my country. I love my parents and my girlfriend. And American icon exploitation is nothing new. But this is just...retarded tastelessness!"

The ad appeared in the Jason Binn-published Hamptons magazine. A reader voiced a complaint to the luxury jet company which elicited a defensive response you can read here. It seems just about anything can be explained away now.

Erm... That would be "WW TWO Flag Raising Used to Sell Luxury Jets" genius.
PS: I think they even flopped the image.

This is a copyrighted image (as far as I know) -- so someone paid handsomely to use this image. Which is different than all those advertisers that use completely 100% free images provided by the U.S. military (taken with their cameras) to shill all sorts of B2G services from telecom to bombers. Which sorta makes me sick.

I think it sucks on many levels: (1) as a former Marine Infantryman -way to bastardize the sacrifice of those Marines (and sailor), (2) as an art director- it's a horrible "first idea", and it's an even shittier execution of the so called "idea" and (3) as someone who deeply loves this country- regardless of the idiot in the drivers seat- what the fuck, am I supposed to feel my pants get tighter and tell everyone I know patriotic this service is?.

Of course someone is going to argue, that those Marines died for "our" (OK,enough with the fucking quotes) way of life. And we'll assume that our way of life is flying around in private jets. Well OK, lets campaign this turd out, how about a shot of the Enola Gay dropping her payload and a shot of a South Vietnamese Officer blowing the brains out of some poor vc sap.

Retarded tastelessness is an understatement Steve.
