Doritos to Erase Banners With Browser Plugin?
Perhaps raising an issue similar to the one raised when DVRs became prominent and several advertising executives accused the device of allowing people to "steal" content, Swedish entity Papercut has created an online tool which asks the question, "What if the internet was just like a bag of Doritos filled only with the stuff you like?"
A video demonstrates how the tool, a browser plug in similar to an ad blocker (or perhaps simply a branded version of it), makes it possible for a person to replace ad space on a web page with any content of their choosing, from the web or from their computer Content is then displayed within Doritos colored borders. There seems to be no apparent Doritos branding beyond the orange color.
Oddly, the site on which the tool is supposed to be available for download is parked and no tool is available. Even the URL that appears in the video, wedontlikebanners.com, goes nowhere. Hmm. Not ready for prime time? Old and out of commission?
It's possible the work is still in conceptual stages and it not yet approved. Though why it's already online and incomplete is a bit of a mystery. That is, of course, if it's even real. It's quite conceivable it's just a dreamy side project from some freelancer interested in making a name for themselves. An email to the creator has not yet been answered.
