Levi's Peels Away Life's Excess, Returns to Simplicity

levis_onion_peel.jpg

Some won't like this commercial because, once again, Levi's, with help from Cutwater, is attempting to position its brand as something much more than it is. Oh wait. No. It's not. It's actually acknowledging the fact it's a simple jeans brand. The fancy things in life aren't as important as your favorite pair of jeans and all that comes with them.

The spot, shot backwards, follows a model as she leaves a photoshoot and returns to her normal life, complete with her perfect, properly facial-haired, exotic-ish-looking boyfriend. It will debut during the season premiers of Gossip Girl September 1.

It's well done and, OMG, we like it.

Mushrooms Marketed, Frumputantes Invade, Olympics Opening Ceremony Trashed One! More! Time!

champignonsdeparis.jpg

- At left: a French mushroom ad! OMG cute. Caption: "Paris mushrooms: it's when they're in your mouth that they're the happiest." Go make them happy. Our resident expat PT Ford isn't so amused.

- Nothing starts the day off better than a kung fu drink ad.

- Dario at Invoke sent us this shot of the Newfoundland-based Hits 99.1 FM van.

- Worthless but interesting tag cloud tool. This one lets you pick fonts and colors. Pop in a URL, see what your homepage mentions most. (Adrants loves itself some Leigh.)

- Public School Intelligentsia learns us a new word: frumputante. Think cash-money bag ladies in Juicy Couture sweats. Streaky hair a plus. Ugh.

Energizer Appeals to the Urchin in Us

peek-a-boo.jpg

Under the tagline "Never let their toys die," Energizer UK depicts kids in various states of, uh, toyless engagement. The campaign won top accolades in Press Advertising at the Cannes International Ad Festival.

See the work (helpfully labeled by ME!):

o Merry-Go-Hostage
o Pretty Pretty Puppy
o Not Quite Rain

Put together by DDB/South Africa to support Energizer's "longest-lasting battery" position. Awesome stuff. What'd you guys do, spend a week at the primary school?

Real Mad Men and Women Make Moments of Madison Avenue Magic

koenig-mccabe-lois-wald.jpg

What do you do when you find yourself in a room full of the people that imagineered your childhood?

You lose all social poise and most of your moxie -- not on purpose, but inevitably.

That's what it felt like during last night's press debut for The Real Men & Women of Madison Avenue and Their Impact on American Culture. As I walked across the floor, treading over familiar phrases like "Got milk?" with Ed McCabe! and Judy Wald! at either elbow, I fell back (hard) on responses like, "Awesome!" and "Woooow!" and "Ha-ha-HA!" -- sometimes even before they could finish a sentence.

JCPenney 'Endorses' Teenage Sex (Not Really, As It Turns Out)

jcpenny_basement.jpg

Come on. You know you can remember it. You were in high school and your boyfriend or girlfriend was on the way over to visit and the anticipation was killing you. Killing you! Your heart was pounding. Chills were running through your body from head to toe. You couldn't wait to see her/him when you opened the door. And when you did, a gush of warmth filled your body and you smiled a big smile. And then...you couldn't wait to tell your mother you were "just going down to the basement to watch some TV" so you could....go down the basement, each tear your clothes off the other and embrace with an urgency words can never describe.

Where the Hell is Matt? E V E R Y W H E R E !

where_the_hell_is_matt_stride_2.jpg

Matt Harding, the guy who quit his job in Australia and, after hooking up with Stride gum, traveled the globe to film himself dancing in 39 countries (courtesy of Stride), has recently completed a second journey. This time, Matt visited 42 countries over a 14 month period and, in addition to filming himself dance, filmed the people of each country dancing along with him.

The result is an amazingly feel-good video that, in a small way, brings the people of the world closer together. I dare you to watch it without feeling at least the tiniest bit of hope that, someday, every human being on this planet can live in peace together.

Kudos to Stride.

Sex Trade Likened to Cattle Call

amnesty_international_cattle_call.jpg

Highlighting the fact 500,000 girls are sold into the sex trade each year, this Amnesty International commercial likens the process to a cattle auction. Not a pleasant scenario for a teenage girl whose hopes and dreams for life are anything but to become an enslaved receptacle for man's seemingly uncontrollable desire for sex.

Sweden Unleashes Even More Weird McDonald's Commercials

mcdonalds_beard.jpg

Back in January, after viewing a crop of really weird McDonald's commercial from DDB Stockholm, I wrote, "OMFG! WTF? We don't know what drugs they use over in Sweden but, damn, we want some now! Or at least we want to know what goes on inside the minds of DDB Stockholm Copywriter Magnus Jacobsson and Art Director Frederik Simonsson who created these three off-the-charts whacked ads for McDonald's."

Sci Fi: Just as Good as 'Gossip Girl,' Except Not Everyone's Human. Problem?

doe-eyed-alien.jpg

Oh my. These ads for the Sci Fi channel make me want to adopt a sweet little potbellied alien. And name it Oliver. And maybe homeschool it.

The tagline: "Open your heart to science fiction. Adopt Sci Fi." Agency: BETC EURO RSCG 4D (thanks, in:fluencia!).

See the short version, but it's the long one that made me the suffer the angst of shedding genre prejudice. Anime overload, here I come.
