ABC's Peter Jennings Has Lung Cancer »
ABC’s Peter Jennings is usually in the anchor seat for even minor breaking news stories. Saturday he was conspicuously absent during the network’s breaking news coverage of the pope’s death. ABC News said that Jennings was ill, but didn’t say what the illness was or why he was able to anchor the news the previous night. Then came Jennings’ decision yesterday not to go to Rome to cover the funeral. That’s when people really began to suspect something was wrong. This morning the 67-year-old Jennings told friends and colleagues in an email that he has lung cancer. He will begin out-patient chemotherapy for the disease next week in New York.
