Emma Watson Loses A Leg For Burberry

emma_watson_burberry_leg.jpg

Yes. Emma Watson, darling of the Harry Potter movie franchise, is making her way into the world of advertising. Except, she's left one of her body parts behind. In a new Burberry ad, her right leg seems to be missing. Was she recently attacked by a shark? Or did a designer, once again, get a bit overzealous with PhotoChop?

It's beyond comprehension how such an egregious error could go unnoticed by all of the eyes that most certainly saw this campaign before it went out the door. Unless...which is a much more likely scenario...it was released on purpose by Burberry which knew full well the press would eat it up. If that's the case, big points for the marketers behind the brand. If not, someone's getting fired. Or at least sent back to PhotoChop...uh...Shop training.

Update: There's a video of the photoshoot which appears to reveal this ad may not have been a Photoshop Disaster. In the video her leg can be seen behind her brother's leg. Whether or not it's the same pose is up for debate but this seems to confirm our assumption Burberry did this on purpose knowing they'd get press. Watch and decide.

President Obama Sells Coats in Times Square

obama_weatherproof_billboard.jpg

Those Obamas are everywhere. Whether they like it or not. This time around, it's the President, himself, appearing, without consent, on a Times Square billboard for the garment company Weatherproof. It's an image of the President wearing one of the company's coats when he was standing on the Great Wall of China.

Weatherproof President Freddie Stollmack, who recognized the coat, told the New York Times, "With a magnifying glass, we saw our logo and zipper pull, and we said, 'That's our coat,'"

The image was properly licensed from the Associated Press but Weatherproof failed to obtain necessary permissions from The White House, which has a policy against using the President's image for commercial purposes, for use of the President's image.

Olympic Hotties Do Stupid Luge Stunts For Nestle

nestle_crispy_chocolate_challenge.jpg

It's the fake (or not) viral thing again. Just as Kobe Bryant jumped over a moving Aston Martin and did a jump shot over a pool of live snakes, we have 2008 Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson (damn, she's cute) and 2006 Olympic gold medal speed skater Apolo Ohno stunting for Nestle.

In a Team Krispies versus Team Chocolate battle, Johnson does a back flip over a moving bobsled and Ohno skates down a luge. While the stunts look very real, the likelihood the handlers behind these two would ever allow them to be put in this sort of danger is highly unlikely.

Fake or not? Who cares. It's marketing.

Without Environmental Concerns There'd Be No Musicians

TDA1%25PrntBeach72.jpg

So, according to this campaign from TDA Advertising for Patagonia's 1% for the Planet, musicians would be nowhere if it weren't for environmental causes. There'd be no beaches on which musicians could build their multi-million dollar palaces; there's be no "socially-charged anecdotes" to share at dinner parties and if musicians had no purpose, we all have to listen to music meant for massage therapists.

With POP, print and online, the campaign promotes a 40-song CD from musicians such as Jackson Brown, Mason Jennings and Jack Johnson who donated their work pro bono. All proceeds from the sale of the CD will go to the charity.

Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa 'Funk Off'

mandela_dalailama_motherteresa.jpg

This comment may best sum up this recent work from LAVA Communications in Sydney promoting the December appearance of The Dalai Lama in Australia for a series of talks and teachings: "A band dressed up as old famous people. It's been done. Fail."

A video, called The Nobel Funk Off, is being sold as having been created by "An anonymous private supporter of His Holiness the Dalai Lama." In other words, it was created by the agency which also says it will "shift focus" in a couple of weeks to reveal more about the event.

Hey, it's all in good fun. right?

Vacant or Not, Paris Hilton Doesn't Like Being Called Vacant

paris_hilton_billboard_vacant.jpg

Apart from the photo usage rights issue which Adland covers here, is it really any wonder a witty wannabe designer at an outdoor company selected a picture of Paris Hilton and slapped the word "vacant" underneath her to promote the fact the billboard is available? Of course not.

Whether or not Paris Hilton is actually vacuously vacant in the head is beside the point. She (with a lot of help from the media) portrays herself that way so it is without surprise she's become the poster girl for celebu-stupidity.

Hilton has voiced her displeasure with Wellington-based Media5 for using her image without permission. Hilton's manager, Jamie Freed, told Stuff the billboard company could expect to her from Hilton's legal team.

If you had an issue with the Chris Farley commercial for DirecTV, you might have an issue with these spots featuring John F. Kennedy, Heath Ledger and Jesus.

Oh wait, they're just spoofs. Fakes. Corporate taunts. Thank you, Landline TV.

Have fun.
