Meebo Debuts Super Bowl Commercial...on YouTube


We've been using web-based instant messaging service Meebo for over a year now and love it. It allows you to aggregate all your IM clients into one, easy to use, interface. It's a company with a loyal and growing follwing so it is without surprise they are looking to hire more developers. What better way than a Super Bowl spot to get the word out to the most people. OK, that would be a horridly inefficient media buy but that's OK becasue Meebo isn't actually placing their as in the game but rather on YouTube.

In a Mash-Up of the 1987 VW Golf ad with the two dudes picking up the old chair off the side of the road and the 1998 Bill Gates and Steve Balmer spoof of the ad, Meebo makers Sandy and Elaine follow suit with a Smiley in the back seat and the announcement they are in need of developers. We like it. Then again, we love Meebo so we have to like this commercial.

Seriously, if you want to try out a new way to manage all your IM accounts without the necessity of having multiple programs open at the same time, you should check out Meebo.

Career Builder Teases, Disney Releases Super Bowl Spots


The pre-Super Bowl commercial fest continues. Now we have a seven second teaser from CareerBuilder for one of the three spots it will run during the game. And on YouTube, you can find two spots for Disney promoting their Wild Hogs and Meet the Robinsons movies. Serioulsy, why bother with the Super Bowl when there's YouTube. Oh wait, YouTube's quality is shitty and a hell of a lot more people still watch the Super Bowl than troll YouTube.

Sunsilk Behind Creation of Freaked Out, Hair-Cutting 'Bridezilla' Video


A tipster tells us the hair care brand Sunsilk was behind the creation of the strange "bridezilla" video which was posted on YouTube January 18 and received 9 million views before it was pulled. It's back up now and in the video, a bride enters a hotel room full of bride's maids, proceeds to flip out and cut her hair off because it looks so bad. Initially thought to be an innocently created farce, it's now been revealed the four women in the video are actresses and were paid to appear in it. What wasn't known until now, according to our source, is that Sunsilk, working with Toronto-based Capital C Communications, was initially involved but backed out at the last minute. It's unclear why Sunsilk separated itself from the project.

While the four women are getting all the glory right now, we've spoken to the director of the video who has graciously promised us more details as soon as he makes sure all his legal "I's" and "T's" are properly crossed. As soon as we have more information, we will gleefully pass it along to you.

UPDATE: Sunsilk, perhaps jealous of all the media attention the four actors are receiving, is now acknowledging their involvement with the creation of the video.

Movie Claims Western Environmentalists Should 'Mine Their Own Business'


Now here's angle you don't see very often. A new film, Mine Your Own Business, "exposes the dark side of environmentalism" and posits Western environmentalists are to blame for keeping poor, third world countries in poverty claiming development and progress will ruin the poor's "quaint" lifestyle.

The movie follows 23 year old George, an unemployed Romanian miner who can't find work because Western environmentalists have launched an anti-mining campaign against a propsed mine in the area that would offer jobs and growth to many people. The movie is said to make us "think about the unintended consequences of blindly supporting environmentalist/anti-development campaigns across the globe. It is a challenge to the cozy consensus that allows westerners to deny progress to those who need it most."

Super Bear Shuffle Revisits Chicago Bears' Super Bowl Shuffle


OK, so this isn't exactly a Super Bowl ad but it's kinda fun. Adrants reader Benjamin George tells us it's a "parody of the 1985 Chicago Bears' Super Bowl Shuffle with Yogi, Boo Boo, Smokey, Pooh, and other cartoon bears." For anyone that was around in 1985, we suppose it'll bring back some memories. Or nightmares. Called Super Bear Shuffle, it was created by Big Game Hunters.

AdBrite Hypes InVideo with Balding Guy in Emo Glasses


Lots of neat new media coming out lately (like this!). This is probably a favourite, as it takes the Youtube concept and turns it into something that benefits video producers many times over.

AdBrite's InVideo service lets you embed video onto your site and share it. When other people put your work on their sites, it reflects your logo and draws clicks back to you.

What a spiffy little service. Our only complaint is the kitschy pitch AdBrite uses to push it. Why is everybody all up on this neurotic hipster laugh-with-us-as-we-laugh-at-ourselves kick? It's cute and all but sufferers of Ad ADD are growing bored with the shtick.

Domino's Rips Off CarMax Campaign With YouTube Video Series


Last October, used car dealer franchise CarMax launched a Boone/Oakley-created television campaign which, among other things, featured a 16 year olf gorl freaking out at her father for buying her a car that was the wrong color. Flash forward to January and a multi-video campaign for Domino's pizza cribs the idea with, yes, a daughter freaking out when her father presents her a car that is not the color she wanted. So much for innovation.

To be fair, the Domino's campaign extended the idea by following the video of the freak out with an apology video from the teen, a video of her explaining she was going to sell the car to someone for $9.99 and - hold your breath - yet another explaining how she got a better deal at Domino's with its Anything Goes Deal.

Got Milk Goes Spanish with Gaggle of Giggles


This Spanish ad for the latest Got Milk? campaign brings us to an island where everyone giggles all day. The laughs and smiles get attributed to milk, toted as a magic salve for strong white teeth.

We were told this ad is funny but mostly we were confused, due no doubt in part to the fact that nobody at Adrants speaks Spanish. We watched it seven times and it didn't get any funnier. In fact, by now we're feeling a little bummed.

We considered getting some milk in order to feel less bummed, because, you know, there's tannin in it, but then we thought, doesn't vodka do almost the same thing?

TBWA's Chuck McBride 'Murders' Co-Workers, Leaves Agency


Oh this is beyond good. This is genius. If we could all leave our jobs this way, a career in advertising would be a very satisfying experience. Imagine getting back at all your idiotic asshole co-workers you had to deal with during your stay at the agency. Imagine pulling a knife on that fat ass, know-it-all account director that made you do all his work. Imagine cutting the nads of that smarmy jerk in accounting who couldn't keep his eyes off your breasts. Of course, they are huge and bulging out of your cleavage-enhancing tops all the time but that's besides the point. Imagine TBWA\CHIAT\DAY Executive Creative Director Chuck McBride murdering all the employees in the San Francisco before he leaves to start his own agency. Imagine...oh's just a spoof YouTube video. Everything's going to be OK.
