Sony's Street PSP Campaign Getting Tagged, Ragged

sony1.jpg

While initially it seemed Sony's PSP street chalk drawing campaign in several cities around the U.S. was being well received by some (us), others have dished out a bit of backlash by defacing the drawings and calling for an end to corporations' attempts to co-op the graffiti art form. AdFreak sums up the issue pointing to a rant over at Gothamist, an online petition to stop the practice and street art blog Wooster Collective's collection of PSP street art.

Brilliant. This campaign is absolutely brilliant. It has pissed off enough people so that not only is it giving the PSP brand a shit load of free press but the campaign itself is gaining momentum as a pop culture phenomenon – negative as it’s acceptance may be. It baffles me that the same people making a fuss about this ad campaign still haven’t figured out that their anger is fueling attention to the message and in turn the critics are doing to job for the agency and PSP – hellllooo people – if you didn’t make all the fuss we wouldn’t be reading about a campaign that is just shy of clever in and of itself, over and over again in both the trades and the main stream press. The best way to squash a campaign is to ignore it. It's job was to get your ire up and by golly that's what the creatives and media peeps did. You - the hypercritical culture police - did the rest. Good job dipwads.

Nothing like a rant times 3.

I saw the new 'dirtball' and 'squirrel' spots last nite.
'PSP- like portable carpet'
The best I've seen in a long time.
