Video Advocates Creation of Cannes Humanitarian Lion

humanitarian_lion.jpg

About a week ago, a video appeared on YouTube that advocates the creation of the Cannes Humanitarian Lion, an award honoring the agency which submitted the best idea and action plan to solve one of several pre-determined worldwide humanitarian issues. Each agency that submitted work to Cannes for any category would be required to also provide one Humanitarian Lion idea. Finalists would then be selected and have until the next year's Festival to execute the work at which time the work would be judged and the winner awarded the Humanitarian Lion.

The effort has the lofty goal of producing work which will have a positive effect on humankind rather than selling shit to people they neither need nor want. A lofty goal, indeed, but is there anything wrong with trying? Those and other questions have been put to the creator of the video. Once the answers are in, they'll be shared here.

No, there's enough Lions already.

Anyway, we all know the big reason agencies do probono is so they can enter it into shows. If it was out of the kindsness of their heart, it probably wouldn't be entered.

that's funny, i thought helping the world economy grow and creating jobs for people was improving the lives of the world's population. silly me.

why not create another lion so more people can pat themselves on the back? after all, getting agency people to jet in from all around the world consuming amazing amounts of fuel and pumping out more pollution in a weekend than most people do in a year but still having the gall to create a "green lion" shows that cannes has it's head so far up it's own ass, nothing they do would surprise me.

They are seriously suggesting that ad agencies can solve global humanitarian crises? That's an insane level of hubris, and an insult to the professionals who work for humanitarian organizations.

PSAs, yes. Solving complex humanitarian emergencies, no.

Digital. Diversity. Billings. Professional Relevance. Integrated Marketing. Shit, the industry can’t even solve its own problems.

A worthy project to improve the world would involve eliminating all the awards shows.

By the way, that video is about the most poorly produced piece of shit ever.

Everything, no matter the purpose, starts with a good idea. And I thought this is "the good idea" show. Maybe we should admit there are sometimes better idea's then advertising.
