Pro-Skaters Call Foul on BBDO Content Rip

bbdo-snickers.jpg

From the Adrants mailbag:

My skater friends have been sending me a link all day long that shows a blatant - and I mean blatant - BBDO rip off of a [Spike Jonze] directed skateboard video [...]. The original was from the most popular skate video in years, but obviously, someone's creative director hadn't seen it:

o Original, and far superior.

o The fraud.

The only way that is legit, would be if Spike did it himself... but quality-wise, it just doesn't stand up.

The ad labeled "the fraud" was put together by BBDO Mexico for Snickers, oddly enough. Pro-skaters Steve Berra and Eric Koston are so pissed about the Spike Jonze rip-off that they posted it on their blog and are trying to drum up some righteous rage.

More on this over at Agency Spy, which has a translation for the Mexican Snickers spot as well as comment from Berra.

BBDO/Mexico's Snickers skater spot (with preceding and concluding text thoughtfully included by the abovementioned angry pro-skaters):

Spike Jonze's "Fully Flared" for Lakai:

It's so blatant, I can't imagine how they thought they'd get away with it. Guess they just didn't understand the skate culture, and that EVERY skateboarder (whom they're targeting) would have seen the video and known the commercial was not done by the same folks.

The days of being able to rip off a commercial and put it in a distant market and KNOW that no one will ever see it are over. The shear magnitude of the reach of sites like YouTube, Revver, etc. and the amount of internet usage by the skateboard generation make this decision to rip-off Spike a very very poor 1. By the way, it's not an homage, it's a RIP-OFF!

Angela...
BBDO = StarFuckers = Wankers...
Wow, I think I just did a "Tweat". Fuck that, I'll stick with smoke signals.

YouTube is the new CA. Just another resource for hacks.

This reminds me of when Coca Cola ripped off director Benny Zenga.

Stole his Winking Circle film (http://www.thewinkingcircle.com) shot-for-shot and even cast look-alike kids.

Skateboarding is commercial. Lakai used a Hollywood director. What did they think would happen?

I'm hungry for a snickers.

Skateboarding has become commercial because of brands like snickers. Spike Jonze is not just a "hollywood director", he is co-owner of Girl Skateboards and has shot countless skate films. Get it straight.
