Songwriter Writes 'Just Do It,' Hopes Nike Will Just Buy It

Twelve-year-old Khristiana "Tia" Parchman has written, arranged and produced a song called "Just Do It" which she, along with her co-producer father, hopes Nike will consider using in upcoming ad campaigns. We're no talent scout but we think this tune certainly has possibilities. There are no lyrics (yet) other than "do it" repeated during portions of the song. You Wieden + Kennedy folks should give it a listen. Here.

Isn't that trademark/copyright infringement? Nike could sue, and then offer a plea wherein the songwriter gifts the rights to the song to Nike.

Ok, before going on a complete tirade I actually decided to give the song a listen.

It only made me more infuriated:
"Twelve-year-old Khristiana "Tia" Parchman has written, arranged and produced a song called "Just Do It" which she, along with her co-producer father"

So basically, this guy wants to jack Nike. He has no actual talent, but he perseveres and produces this steaming pile of musical diarrhea. Not quite what you'd call a slam dunk, he figures his only option is to tack his 12 year olds name on to it and pray for mercy. Whatever. Fuck this crappy loop and this shithead father exploiting his innocent child.

For some reason, all I can think of now is the "do it" dialogue from the recent Starsky and Hutch... http://www.moviewavs.com/cgi-bin/mp3s.cgi?Starsky_And_Hutch=comeondoit.mp3

Excuse me for a minute but is there any common courtesy left in the world? Any desire to succeed? Any support for people trying to make it in the world. Peter, you must not be a father. If you were, you'd know what it would be like to help your kids succeed in life. Benkay, one would hope Nike would see this as something positive and not a brand hijack which it is clearly not. How do you think anyone gets a break in life? They take chances. They work hard. They use all the contacts and channels they have to get where they need to go. Get off your fucking high horses and root for this girl. You don't like the song? Fine. It's not for you. It's for Nike. If Nike doesn't like it. Fine. Nothing lost. You can't blame a Dad or a kid for doing what they feel they need to do do move ahead in life.

People trying to make it in the music business don't put together a half-assed "Daft-Punk" set of loops and pitch it to Nike with their kids name on it.

You want to talk about common courtesy, and then you go on to make huge assumptions about me and the other commentors here. You go so far as to imply that we are somehow to blame for a grave injustice against these absolute hacks and their "Desire to succeed... support for people trying to make in the world..."

Get a grip. "It's not for you, it's for Nike." What a grand revelation, it really puts it in a different perspective now.

"You can't blame a Dad or a kid for doing what they feel they need to do do move ahead in life."

Hahaha... this site gets more and more asinine every day.

No one's forcing you to read it:-)

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that the "song" resembles Usher's "Yeah?"

Posted by: JD on September 8, 2005 12:57 PM

I agree with Steve - sure maybe dad helped, but just as likely not.

A kid with a regular Mac and some pirated software today has more and better technology than ILM had when they made Star Wars. There's a ton of great content out there created by young people - they know the net better than most grown-ups.

At the end of the day, sure, the song probably won't get picked up by Nike, but it illustrates how the ability to create is moving into everyone's hands - and that kids are the ones who are taking advantage. And kudos for giving it a shot, regardless.

Too many people sit around the sidelines in life, I'm sure this girl is going to go somewhere big - just on bold attitude alone. I'm giving the benefit of the doubt. We're too cynical these days.

What did one Dead head say to the other after they ran out of pot at a Grateful Dead concert?

"This music sucks!"

this is some funny shit

usher/lil john + bacardi guy + vocoder

awesome

It is atrociously bad songwriting and production. Can't blame her and her dad for trying, but if nike actually used this track, the person who made the decision to use it would be fired.

keep trying "tia", but stay in school. If you seriously want to write and produce music, listen to more than Usher, get a better production program then garage band, and take some music lessons.

No need to be mean to her for trying, but the track is crap.

I am Tia's friend from school, and I would like to make it clear that Tia made this music on her own, with a tiny bit of help from her dad. She is very original, and would never think of copying someone else's ideas for her music. She is also very talented, and I think that NIKE should pick this music! It's a perfect tune for something like a NIKE comercial, and would be perfect. Tia worked hard on this, and she deserves for her music to get picked.

Sorry, but calling this track music is a disgrace to people who make music.

I'm sorry Tia, but this really isn't good. And telling you that something is good, when it's really not, would be to disrespect you.

If you want to get serious with music, please, please, buy a guitar, play the piano, learn the notes.. Don't just take a computer-program and sample some mass-produced garbage and call it music.

Don't do it again!

OK, THIS IS A REPLY TO ALL OF U PEEPS WHO THINK TIA'S DAD MADE THIS SONG AND PUT HER NAME ON IT AND NOW SHE IS GONNA DROP OUTA SCHOOL AND THAT SHIT (steve hall, this one is fo u) TIA, WHROTE THIS SONG HERSELF, AND USED ONLY HER KEYBOARD TO MAKE IT. USING ABOUT 60 - 70 DIFFERENT KEYS TO MAKE A "JUST DO IT" SOUND WAS HARD. SHE THEN PUT THE TEMPO ON MEGA MEGA MEGA MEGA HIGH, AND IT MADE A SOUND. THE ONLY HELP SHE GOT FROM ANYBODY WAS MAYBE HAVING HER DAD BUY HER THE KEYBOARD. THATS IT, SO STEVE, I WANT U TO LISTEN FOR A BOUT 2 SECONDS OK? ASK US IF WE CARE ABOUT U, UR LIFE, OR UR REALLY PATHETIC COMMENT, CUZ BY WHAT I SAW, I PICTURE A 40 SOMTHIN YEAR OLD WHO IS ALONE AND HAS NOTHING TO DO ALL DAY BUT TRY TO BE A SIMON COWELL... I go to the same school as Tia and am a very good friend of her's. She does write all of her songs by herself. In person you should hear her rap. She can make up anything on the spot. So fuck all you fucking fuckers that think this is crap. You can go fuck your ho mom who fucks horses dicks and anyone with ten dollars. This is real and she is really going to go places.

This is Tia's dad. Adrants, my I be the first to say "Thank you for running a blog about my daughter. I will forever be indebted.

Okay, I thought it was time to give you nay sayers an update. For those CRITICS (and I use that term loosely) I ask that you take a look at her accomplishments. I have a full life, I don't have to live vicariously through my daughter. I'm just a proud dad who is helping to pave the way for his seed. Perhaps if you spent more time nuturing your child as opposed to blasting mine, then maybe one day you'll experience the joy that I have seeing her dreams become a reality.

Oh! not that you're interested, but she just did a PSA for Voter Registration called Vote. Click the link to hear it

Btw, she's about to release her CD in the fall. So, I encourage all of you skeptics to pick it up.
