Clifford Irving's Howard Hughes Whites Lies Back in Fashion

advancement_white_lies.jpg

Remember that supposedly authentic authorized biography of Howard Hughes written by Clifford Irving that turned out to be a hoax? Neither did we until we visited Wikipedia but now the whole affair is a movie starring Richard Gere. Opening this weekend, the movie is getting some kitschy promotion from Deep Focus which created a site called People for the Advancement of White Lies on which various videos of people telling white lies can be viewed.

Even though the real Clifford Irving is still out there and wrote several successful books following his conviction for his Howard Hughes hoax, it's gotta suck knowing that one terrible part of your life is going to be up on the silver screen for all to see. The dude was probably happy with it remaining a distant...even forgotten, memory.

Yes, it does suck. But I can live with it, because it was a hundred years ago, I have a blessed life now, and I know that the past is fiction, the future is fantasy, and the present is an ongoing illusion.
Thanks!
Clifford

Steve - Clifford
I read the book... Still have it... It was great, and I really think Clifford's claim that it sucked is somewhat tongue in cheek... It made him a national figure. That's the kind of shit we wankers in advertising would call something dumb like guerilla or viral or some other dipshit name. That was publicity worth millions. So he went to jail... Was it hard time? I dunno. But it's paid off ever since. Maybe if Julie and Sean do time for not paying Wal-Marts legal fees (fucking millions) they'll come out like bandits too... Nahh, she's too stupid and he's just pathetic. Good for you Clifford... You're a hell of a writer.
Cheers/George

Hi- How can I get a copy of the "Autobiography of Howard Hughes" by Clifford Irving? I would really like to read it.
Thank you-
Dana

PS Clifford- I think you are a very blessed & intelligent person. :)

Clifford Irving should be remembered as a very intelligent author who is not afraid of the hard work of research that it takes to get a non-fiction book published. I watched The Hoax movie this morning and I agree with Clifford Irving; I wondered why he was portrayed as being broke and desperate, when he had the publishers at his disposal? Also, the movie portrayed his friend, Richard Suskind, as a kiss-butt groupie, following all orders from Clifford. He was a published author himself so I can't see him being as he was portrayed in the movie. However, just as the book was not authorized by Howard Hughes, the movie is not being hailed as the truth by Clifford Irving so I guess what goes around, comes around. Clifford paid his dues. May he live the rest of his life in peace and happiness.
