Apple Removes Man Men's Cigarrette

madmenitunes.jpg

In what can only be described as supremely idiotic, the cigarette in the hand of the man who appears in the famed Mad Men promotional image was digitally removed when it was placed on iTunes to promote the sale of Mad Men Season 1. WTF? Does Apple think everyone who downloads this show will then run out to the store and buy a pack of smokes so they can smoke while watching the show? Are people actually this stupid? WTF?

Looks like they've changed the image since you saw that because I thought I'd hop on iTunes to check it out and the cigarette is back as of 1:40 p.m. Pacific. Check it out here.

Imagine if a booby appeared - the horror!

could've been a legal reason. i think it's illegal to show smoking if your target audience includes youth. however, that's an advertising thing, not related to the actual show or any other programs/movies depicting smoking.

Er guys, Steve, I'm hardly a graphics artist, but in your comparison shots

a) the cigarette, if present, would intrude upon the text, and

b) the white cigarette requires a dark background to show up at all, which would mean the surrounding text would be much harder to read.

Isn't it at all possible that there's no conspiracy against smokers but that they just wanted to make the damn thing simple and legible??
