Huffington Misses Point, Not for the First Time
Sigh. According to a Huffington Post rep, Madame Arianna met co-chairman Rich Silverstein of Goodby, Silverstein and Partners -- allegedly single-handedly responsible for "Got Milk?", and asked him how the Democrats could get people to respond to their finger-pointing and whining -- er, issue framing.
Silverstein suggested a "visual blog" that metaphorically TiVos the last six years and plays them back "without comment" so the American people can connect the devastating dots.
With Silverstein's help, Huffington gives us three posters that consist of, well, finger-pointing and whining. Granted, in a very sassy typeface. See creative: Names, Slogans and Events. The tagline is, "Haven't we had enough?"
In the event that somebody feels inclined to tear us a new asshole, we think it's worth saying that negativity never wins the day. Unless you're a critic. And nobody wants to vote a critic into office. Isn't that disgustingly, decidedly obvious? It's about as logical as marrying a guy who looks out the window, then looks at you, and says, "Well hell, I could do worse."
We're into charming dudes who make us giggle and give everybody nicknames. Whether that's good for us isn't really what matters.

Wow. I know you're a bunch of Repuglycans over here at adrants, but this is just about the same as typing a big headline that says "We hate liberals". What we have right now is the worst government in the history of this country. A bull in a china shop. Our country is the china shop, in case you don't get the analogy. When someone is rampaging through everything you hold dear (human life, the constitution, that sort of stuff), you don't stop to say, Gee isn't it a lovely day out today? No. You say, somebody stop this maniac! No, you don't say it, you scream it. That's what she's trying to do, apparently. Though I will say it's fairly illegible, unless you're really trying to read it. There's a time for charm and there's a time for WTF!? This is such a time.
We'll see how the campaign fares.
I like it. A lot. Don't whine too loudly. The candidates always point to the failures of the incumbent ("I'm a uniter, not a divider!", framing Clinton's moral failures, "I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building," etc.)
I don't know about the whole getting negative about negativity, but I do think those are some great posters. And I think there is something to be said for all of the imagery and tension those words conjure up. Powerful in my opinion.

These posters are just crass and ugly, aesthetically and politically.
Political ads, no secret here, by consultants suck. Now, we get this shit from a real agency? Talk about let-downs.
The type doesn't assault the eye - no doubt the intent - but bruises our rods and cones with its crushed leading & relentless u.c. approach (not to mention the craft-free kerning).
The message? I guess it'll make us libs feel vindicated (again). But it's yesterday's downer news to independents/undecideds, the folks on whose votes '08 hangs.
Perhaps Nathaniel wants to expound on the catastrophic times we live in, and not simply trot out the usual litany of emotion from the left. How bout some facts.
HEY! This government has seized our rights! At least that's what I hear, and I really don't know anyone who's actually had their rights seized. But the War in Iraq is for oil! Although, I'm still paying more than I was before the war, so I'm not quite sure where Bush is putting all that oil. But Bush lied, and people died! Well, he didn't really lie, and there were a ton of Democrats saying we needed to take out Iraq before the whole yellow cake thing. I really need to stick with the slogans and stop actually thinking about this stuff.
