Contemplating Parenthood? Brooke Shields May Change Your Mind

routan-baby.jpg

At left is the baby I made with Johnny Depp, courtesy of the Routan Babymaker3000.

The babymaker's part of a broader Volkswagen Routan campaign featuring Brooke Shields. You've probably seen the ads where she barrages expecting couples with questions about why they're having babies "simply for the love of German engineering." (I didn't really get this at first, but after sitting through the mocumentary, I completely understand: people are having babies so they can buy minivans! Of course!)

The spots are cheesy and forced, but the babymaker made for at least 10 minutes of furtive entertainment. (Brooke Shields stared severely all the while.) Use a sliding dial to decide how much Mommy or Daddy you want your Routan baby to have. I've found my spawn look best when Daddy's features are minimal.

THIS ADD IS IS NOT HUMOROUS, IF ANYTHING IT IS DEGRADING AND INSENSITIVE TO ALL WOMEN. I HAVE NEVER REACTED TO ANY TV ADVERTISING LIKE THIS;EVERYTIME IT AIRS, I BECOME MORE ENRAGED ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE WILL DO IN ORDER TO SELL A PRODUCT. CHILDBEARING SHOULD NOT BE USED AS A SELLING TACTIC!!!!!!

i worked on the production crew for this ad and brooke was an absolute JOY to work with!

@denise-- i think you're missing the point: they aren't using having kids to sell an ad, they're making a joke that when people have kids, they usually buy minivans. this minivan is so cool that brooke is saying people are having babies just so they can justify buying this minivan. that's the joke... : )

It disgusts me that Brooke would agree to be in such an ad that trivalizes having babies. For someone that dealt with infertility, she of all people should know the pain people go through to have children when it is difficult. To endorse an ad that state people are having babies just to buy a minivan is insulting, degrading, and offensive. It completely changed my opinion of her. This ad was done in poor taste.

it's really sad to me that you can't see the humor in this.
