'Truth' Campaign Asks 'WhatDaFxup With Zephr?'

whudafxup_zephyr.jpg

While referring to tobacco companies' use of the code word "Zephyr" in the fifties to refer to cancer might not be the strongest argument, the American Legacy Foundation's "Truth" campaign has launched a new campaign that includes a spot featuring a guy who goes into an oncologist's office to see if he has Zephyr/cancer. The campaign hopes to call attention to what it calls "absurdities" it sees in tobacco company marketing. A second spot will follow in a day or two.

This ad makes me wanna start smoking! These ads are stupid and cliche. And the spokesman seems quite arragont. Please stop wasting your money on adds and spend it on the sick who are dying of cancer from smoking. Quit talking down to us. Who cares? I am writing. Stop the maddness of your incipit adds. It ain't working. Your facts are meaningless. I am doing a study on how many people hate your adds and the results show 1 in 5 hate them. The vulgar name of the campaign is also insulting.

Posted by: jeff malcolm on June 13, 2006 02:47 PM

The radio ads are just as bad. They have 'fuck' bleeped out. What radio station in their right mind would air this garbage - especially since the FCC just upped indecency fines to $350,000 per violation (up from $35,000).

That's my two cents. Thanks for letting me rant.

Posted by: Fuzz Martin on June 14, 2006 10:48 PM

rant all you want. 1 out of 5 people hate their adds because they think that its all fake and that their making it up. "truth" doesnt give a rats ass about u indivudally. they dont care if u rant or rave. there here to inform u of all the dangers of smoking. being an AP BIOLOGY student.. i have learned about the effects of smoking. down to the molecule. ur just killing yourself.

Posted by: mike on June 20, 2006 12:42 PM

you people say you hate the ads, well you know what i hate it when people smoke around me. its funny how someone before me commented on how "truth" spends money on these ads... do you know how much tobacco companies spend on ads? A LOT. if you look at these ads the filming does look a little cheap. who cares if they almost say fuck... these ads are fine, and true... smoking does kill. but hey if all the smokers in the world die of lung disease, than at least eating in resturants would be more pleasant.

about a comment above... youve gotta be stupid if youd want to smoke after watching these. that makes no sense at all

all i have to say is my grandfather died of lung cancer and it was because of second hand smoke. i hate it when people smoke,it is stupid.i dont care what studies say if you want to inhale tar and many other commicals go ahead.if you are saying no to these ads then you are standing by while people like you are dying in the steets ,in hospitals,in there own homes.ask yourself something are these ads really wrong?

Posted by: melissa oudhuis on June 26, 2006 01:39 PM

All I have to say is a bunch of attorny generals sued the tobacco companies and gave it to hipster ad agencies to come up with gay ads. Oh yeah, they also gave some to the Health Insurance industry. WHADDAFXUPPAWIDDAT?

Sorry about all the smokers out there and those who died from smoking. We had to use you to get the money so we could pass the money to our friends.

Posted by: Me on July 17, 2006 02:19 AM

The ads on TV are quite dumb. People smoke because they want to smoke. We all know it's bad but it's our choice.

Posted by: Bill on July 25, 2006 06:27 PM

To all the people arguing that smoking is bad, of course it is. The point most of us are trying to make here though is that these ads are ridiculous. They need to go back to the old ads where they showed what actually happened to peoples bodies that smoked (such as the ad where they squeezed goop out of an artery of a smoker). Those made people want to quit, these ads just make people want to hate the industry. They're utterly useless in solving the smoking problem.

Posted by: mark on July 26, 2006 09:57 AM

I just watched the mattress ad about where a tobacco rep had said they should ban sleep because people die in there sleep. This is the dumbest commercial I have ever seen. I see no way that this would keep anyone from smokeing or people who do smoke from quitting. It seems like a huge waste of money for these rediculous commercials. That is 30 sec of my life that I will never get back.

Posted by: jose on July 27, 2006 11:20 PM

You people need to get a life, it's true, smoking is bad for you, but if you'll use those apparently high powered brains of yours, you'd know that if you've ever spent more than 5 minutes sitting in traffic, or walking around in a big city, like, say, Los Angeles, you've inhaled more toxins then the average smoker takes in in a month. My favorite situation is, someone telling me that smoking is bad and killing me, while they're chewing on a double cheese, double meat, widow maker burger. Heh, TRUTH HURTS, don't it?

Posted by: Roger on August 21, 2006 04:08 PM

OH, just one more thing. I hope the guy with the spider on his head gets paid alot of money, he sure makes a fool out of himself in those idiotic commercials he appears in. TRUTH HURTS don't it?

Posted by: Roger on August 21, 2006 04:42 PM

I think the commercials are great. They are not specifically targeted to get people to stop smoking, yes that is true. What they are doing is exposing the tobacco companies' deceitfulness in trying to make smoking seem as harmless as possible. Smoking is a horrible habit that does not just affect the smoker, everyone around is affected. And the the person who put the fact that the average person in a big city inhales more toxins than a smoker, you're right, but the smoker takes in those toxin too, so he or she is just adding the their problems. I wish they go to a mix of showing the effects of smoking and exposing tobacco companies. I don't like the play on of the "f-bomb", but it does really hit on the target, what the **** is up with these companies? And one more thing, if smoking wasn't so harmful, I don't think anybody would waste so much effort and money into trying to stop it.

Posted by: Brandon on August 22, 2006 03:09 PM

And just one more thing, Roger, a double cheeseburger tastes a LOT better and the bad effects of it can be worked off with healthy exercise. Smoking leaves permanent, life-long effects. And I'm with Wesley, when all of the people who don't care about the effects of smoking are all gone, that double cheeseburger with bacon, egg, pastrami, chili, cheese and bacon will be a lot more enjoyable with the smell of a Marbolo Red from the guy across the room! MMMM now I'm hungry.

Posted by: Brandon on August 22, 2006 03:17 PM

WOW!! Are you ever naive(spelling?), are you a robot? Do you think like a first grader? Everything that is bad is bad and everything that is good is good? The effects of that double cheesburger can be worked off with healthy exercise? What about colon cancer genius? OH, wait, did I say cancer? OH NO!! Not cancer, smoking is the only thing that can possibly give you cancer....HA, you people make me laugh out loud!! Tobacco companies made an effort to down play the bad effects of smoking? What do you think Ronald McDonald was doing? How about the Jack in the Box Clown? They aren't exactly stressing the bad effects of consuming the products we ALL enjoy. What about all the other stuff that gives you cancer that just a decade ago was supposed to be good for you? Personally, I think that the government should stay the he** out of our business, as well as the bunch of phsycos that think that they know better than I do about my health. And as for the smell? Well I don't particularly like the smell of the air fresheners you find everywhere, but, I don't gripe about it. And those that are allergic to them? Well, I guess they'll just have to carry an epi-pen with them.

And guess who else was against smoking to the point of starting and anti-smoking campaign, Hitler.

You seem like an intelligent person, use a little common sense, and don't just believe it because that idiotic, stupid looking jerk says so.

You don't have to like what others do, but don't they have the freedom to do it?

Posted by: Roger on August 22, 2006 08:46 PM

yeah smoking is bad and we all know it.
so when you start smoking most people know the risks and they do it anyways.
As for the commercials being dumb and taking up time in your life... your watching tv anyways its not like for those 30 seconds you were going to be doing something a lot more important.
this company is only trying to give you facts.. dosent matter if they are important or not.

Posted by: Ashley on August 23, 2006 11:36 PM

I do know that smoking is not the only way get cancer. There are numerous carcinogens out there, smoking just happens to be a cancer causing agent that people purposefully bring on themselves. I will not ever understand that. And on a personal note, I happen to have a little sister who is one of those people that do have fatal reactions to cigarette smoke. So, what you are saying is that since one person decided to smoke and caused an allergic reaction in ANOTHER person that was enjoying the day, that OTHER person should have to stick an epi-pen in themselves to reverse the effects of the first person's actions? And the government is dealing with a double-edged sword. If they, like you said, stayed out of everyone's business then everyone would complain that the government does not care about the people and are not investing the money to inform the public of the dangers. You and a lot of other people may already know about its bad effects, but there are other people, say, children of an upcoming generation. But then they run these ads and programs, like D.A.R.E., then the other side complains because they feel that they are being singled out and then become offended. And that stuff that causes cancer that they didn't know caused it a decade ago, most of it is illegalized or banned now days, a decade later. And those so-called 'psychos', a.k.a doctors/physicians/medical experts, have gone to school for a very long time to study specifically human health and the human body, and, this is just me I don't know about anybody else, I would say they probably know better than me what is in my best interest for my personal health. And Hitler is known for being one of the smartest people to live. He had many great ideas, but because of the bad ideas, all of his ideas are considered evil by ignorant people. Finally, I don't mean to be rude but, Roger, what grade are you in man?

Posted by: Brandon on August 26, 2006 01:05 AM

And by the way, I like Melissa's comments.

Posted by: Brandon on August 26, 2006 01:10 AM

These ads are ridiculous. They "experiments" they do are totally illogical and prove nothing. Has anyone seen the ad where the guy, Brian, claims that tobacco companies make fruity flavored cigarettes to attract children? He goes on to make a "lemonade stand" type structure and paints it a bunch of bright colors. Of course, it attracts children. It's certainly not because the children read the flavor "mocha taboo" on the side of the stand and decided "I love that flavor. I'm going to buy some of whatever they are selling." The children obviously go over to investigate because the structure looks like a lemonade stand...

Posted by: Jasmine on September 6, 2006 06:01 AM

I think your commercials are very funny, and do encourage people to quit smoking or don't start. So keep on keeping on and don't listen to the other people posting negative comments, they are just mad because they smoke and they know it is bad.

Posted by: Kristin on September 7, 2006 04:26 PM

Truth is just as guilty as the tobacco companies in misleading the public. I am sure we are all familiar with how big tobacco has misinformed the public. "Truth" knows the FCC has banned the use of certain words on broadcast television. Fucks is among these words. Truth has side stepped this by deliberately misspelling fucks. Well FX YOU TRUTH! How dare you criticize someone else for doing the same thing you are doing.

Posted by: Ted on September 11, 2006 03:32 PM

And by the way, where do you shop for fruit flavored cigaretts? I've NEVER seen anything like that. Hmmm.....advertising a product that dosent exist, I do believe that is also illegal.

Posted by: Ted on September 11, 2006 03:39 PM

About the ads, I agree they are quite cheesy, low budget, but effective in their purpose. Just look at the discussions they have created. I would surmise that they are at least raising the awareness of the dangers of smoking cigarettes, and maybe in 10-15 years people will remember this and actively break the addiction.

My gripe though, is at the idiot who complains that life is unfair, cries about their poverty, and takes another drag on the cancer stick in their fingers and then buys another pack and complains about the high price they have to pay... Talk about ingorance. To those of you who do smoke, how much $$$ have you burned for that little temporary buzz that goes away. Just think if you had placed that money in the bank, used it to buy a car, house, boat, clothes, etc... Was it really worth the trade?

Thanks for letting me rank. BTW, I rarely pay retail for anything, and resultingly have more spare money in my pocket than I ever thought possible!!! I'd rather keep my money than give it to an advertising campaign that makes them rich off my desires...

Posted by: Hub on September 17, 2006 10:14 PM

i love your ads so much. I am 13 and my friends and i think that ur ads are funny but theyre also true. these companies are 100% targeting minors and that's horrible. i am so glad that someone is else is starting a campaign thats saying more than"drugs will hurt you. drugs are bad". they're turning people against them by showing them the truth and that's AWESOME!!!!! Keep up the good work!=)

Posted by: katie on September 18, 2006 05:10 PM

I am so sick of these fucking truth campaigns. It seems like they air 1 and sometimes 2 of them every commercial break. People who smoke are taking a risk and they understand that but you dont have to shove it down everyones fucking throat. These truth adds are so obnoxious

You people are ridiculous. I'm sure I'm younger than many of you here [14] and i just want to know how you could be saying this. these ads [YES ONE D, NOT ADDS as many of you spelled it] are informing people of how ridiculous tobacco companies are. anyone ridiculing these ads are probably smokers in denial that they could die from cancer. YES YOU CAN DIE ANYONE CAN, you don't even have to be a smoker to die from lung cancer. i know many people, in and out of my family that have died are have been recently diagnosed with cancer. their little saying 'whudafxup' should not be offensive at all because you know what, there is something wrong with our world. i mean look at what some of you are saying. COME ON SERIOUSLY CAN WE BE MATURE SO WHAT OHH HE MEANS TO SAY THE 'F' WORD, GROW UP!!!!!!!As for the 13 year old who commented above i agree with you. As for Justin, also above me, are you kidding me?? yeah maybe they are shoving it down their throats but guess what? thats obviously the only way for people to get the point ITS A STUPID THING TO DO. PEOPLE AREN'T STOPPING BY THEMSELVES, not enough of people anyway. most of you that commented this are despicable, how immature can you be? I'm sure many of you are adults and I am officially proud to be as mature as i am, since i seen to know more than many of you. If i ever turn out like some of you are, I'll make sure to kill myself, maybe I'll start smoking, sounds like fun doesn't it? there's something wrong with the world these days and i now know that it's the people on it.

Yes it is dumb but watch your self in a couple of years you could also be smoking so beware. Your only in the 8th grade highschool is a totally different world.

Ok, seriously now. this is getting out of hand. all the non-smokers here have completely lost track of what this thread was all about. THAT THESE ADS ARE STUPID, PRESENT COMPLETELY IRRELIVENT INFORMATION, AND ARE IN NO WAY PERSUASIVE TO STOP ONE FROM SMOKING. now, before i continue, i'll let you know that i do think its great to inform people smoking is bad. thats a good thing. the problem with these ads, is that they dont accomplish this. and the very few that did present any relevent facts (i think from like 8-9 years ago) did it in such a pompous way that it painted a horrible picture of NOT smoking. id rather knock a few years off my life than be a smug a-hole that lives forever. the problem with THE TRUTH organization is that the 14 year old who posted above, could probably dig up more relevent facts and create a better non-smoking campaign. She should receive the thousands of $$$ for her efforts rather than the half-*** TRUTH.

Posted by: Jason on April 16, 2007 04:37 AM

did you know that these commercials where made by the tobacco companies themselves? well, it is because an owner of a tobacco company was sued for the consequences of tobacco. the owner lost and was forced to inform people the bad side of tobacco.

who gives a flying fook what they say....... I'm a smoker that was born too late while the tabacco co. knew what they were doing with research that they contributed to. They added things that are not found in tabacco to make us dependent for their profit. Fook all you ignorant bastards.

I don't care if people smoke! Whatever, that is each persons choice. I do agree that if you choose to, be considerate of others who may not! I have 5 kids that are all learning to read, my oldest can read well and my second is still reading phonetically, so swearing phonetically in T.V. ads is absolutly appalling! I can keep my kids away from second-hand smoke but apparantly not away from using profanity and suffering from stupidity. You want to make the world a better place teach the Children to make good choices and protect them from our generations short commings.

Posted by: Juliana Esperanza on June 14, 2007 06:26 PM

Has anyone stopped to think about these so-called "facts"?

For instance: (paraphrased) A tobacco company supplied products for the Muppet Movie. In 1979! That was twenty years ago, and hardly applies to advertising today. And since when were the Muppets for children? They were always a family show, and as such included things that adults can identify with, as well as things for children.

Blah blah, all this stuff about the 80s. That was 20 years ago.

Apparently labeling cigarettes as low-tar and light is bad, since they can be just as deadly. Yes, and a "lite" candy-bar will make you just as fat if you eat enough of them.

There's also criticism about marketing to minorities, to "be seen as a friend" or some such. Congratulations, that's called advertising. Every company tries its best to sell its products to everyone it can. That is the point of advertising.

Etc. etc.

The point is, everyone knows smoking is bad for you. That's not the issue, and I have no problem with them saying so. But they are not telling the truth, they are telling a warped, strange truth that really has nothing to do with tobacco advertising today.

I am a tin can of corn and peas. I am discomforted by the lack of representation for my kind. There are many a canned product who have died from dented-can-botulism-infection, mislabeled "microwave-safe", or... unplanned-third-turn-can-opener-abortion (this is where a meal preparation goes horribly wrong when a can of ingredients is plucked from the pantry, punctured by the can opener's sharp disk, and then revealed by aroma or sight - that it is not even part of the recipe!). Let us take a moment of silence, even briefly, to remember these fallen can-preserved goods; AND note!, note that there are few who know the TRUTH about these atrocities.
I bid you adieu, fair folks of the wild northern hemisphere.

Don't get me wrong I hate smoking just as much as the next person but these commercials are just ridiculous. I mean, is this the best that they could come up with? I'm no angel by any means but I don't like to explain to my 4 yr old what "whatdafxup" means.

Posted by: Andy on August 5, 2007 03:17 AM

Personally I love the ads on TV and on the radio. It makes me want to start smoking even less. I mean everyone has their own opinion of everything and some people really hate your ads but I love them. And the name of it is something you won't forget. Whatdafxckup?

Posted by: chelsea danae on August 14, 2007 01:36 PM

about the ads:

yes, smoking is bad
no, I don't want to be around smokers
BUT-think about this, drinking is worse-drinking kills MORE INNOCENT people (being hit by drunk drivers) then second hand smoke could ever hope to kill. Someone else made mention of fast food, again, heart disease, diabetes, things of that nature kill MORE people than smoking.

SMOKING IS NOT KILLING AMERICA
WE ARE KILLING OURSELVES with our bad eating, heavy traffic, self centered wasteful livestyles

you want to promote health? eat veggitables, don't drink milk (yup..do some research, it's actually bad for you), don't watch TV, read a book, read the newspaper, spend some time outside or with your kids, don't drink, cook your own food so you know what's in it, car pool or ride your bike to places when you can, and don't sit here and complain about other people's bad habits because you have your own.

Posted by: Jamie on August 31, 2007 01:23 AM

The anti-smoking crowd is an anti-death cult. And being anti-death is the same as being anti-life, a lot like PETA, who doesn't understand that eating the flesh off the bones of our mammal brothers is honuring them, that is why the preservation of human corpses through embalming and entombing is so sick. Humans are food for microbes and plants, and you'll never accept this biological FACT! So be loyal to your biological nature and die. No god or machine is going to give you eternal life, you cowards!

As for the "facts" in the commercials, I have never seen chocolate-cherry Camel's or peanut-butter Player's, nice big lie there! And their stats on lung-cancer are skwered by the "fact" that 101yr(who smoked) and 10yr olds(never exsposed to second-hand smoke, maybe car exuast) are reported as smoking deaths, so be weary of those who give out SOCIO-POLITICAL "facts"!

Sincerley, Your friendly universal Bio-geo-chemist

Posted by: Roger A on September 7, 2007 05:28 PM

This is the saddest thing I've ever seen. I understand that these commercials are "trying" to do a good thing, but when you see a young child just learning to read sounding out WHATDAFXUP. I flash to when the boy is fourteen and in a quit smoking commercial and he says "I &#*@ never @*# touched the $*#& and look at how #@&#& awesome I turned out." Great now I can breathe but my ears are bleeding from all the profanity. I want to start smoking because these ads completely suck!

Posted by: J on September 12, 2007 04:23 PM

I don't agree with the adds myself because they do alot of things that the tobacco companies would never do.. such as the 'lemonade stand.' thats just taking it way out of proportion, but of course i guess it helps some. I love smoking myself i smoked for about a year, only to quit and pick up dipping and occasionally smoking a hookah which after 1 hour of continued smoke it is equivilent to 200 cigarettes.. do i care? nope i enjoy every minute of it.. but i also respect others opinions about second hand smoke which is why i currently dip instead. We all know it's going to kill us eventually but hey were all gonna die.. no point in living life longer when you dont even care.. and besides theres always other drugs to turn to if i ever get cancer.. but seeing as how im not even 18, i dont have to worry about it for a while.

Posted by: Joe on September 16, 2007 08:08 PM

i dunno ive smoked for 2 years now and im 17 and im quitting now.... these commercials do get on my fucking nerves but they really are true.... i feal good about quitting though... i hate the smell of smoke... gives you bad breath and shit and a waste of money.... but damn its hard to quit but ima tough it out

Posted by: Casey on September 17, 2007 12:56 AM

ok, so smoking causes cancer huh? well duh but lets see what else causes cancer... hmmmm the sun does, the tanning bed does, car fumes do, factory fumes do... so what the f*** are you gonna do about that?? get the picture you bias f***s?! i'm a smoker and guess what? i don't plan on quitting anytime soon. so have fun with your little commercials and stuff. it's not gonna get smoking illegal or anything. also, just because someone smokes doesn't mean their gonna get cancer. i knew someone who lived to be 85 and smoked till the day she died and she DIDN'T die of lung cancer. or anything related to smoking

Posted by: liz on October 20, 2007 11:44 PM

i didn't mean to put the same message up seven times. but it wasn't working and apparently i didn't read the small print lol.. but i have one more thing to add.. a bunch of things can give someone cancer as well as heart disease. AND those two things can just develop on their own. so these commercials are totally bias. some cigarettes are labled "lights" and "ultra lights" because you don't inhale as much smoke. i'm a smoker. i know these things.

these commercials suck so hard. and to the people saying everyone who doesn't like them are just smokers in denial of the harm of cigarettes can suck a dick. i think everyone who smokes knows the dangers of smoking. the only people these commercials MIGHT benefit are kids, but they already shove the same information down your throats in all years of school, so please TRUTH, spare us the 30 seconds of completely useless and irrelevant information. not to mention that as a kid i was very against smoking but ended up doing it anyway. shit happens, and seeing these ads aren't gonna stop people from doing it, especially since most of them are about tobacco companies being corrupt rather than the dangers of smoking anyway.

These commercials only rant about cancer and how evil cigarettes are but these commercials are what are really evil.Next time you are looking shit up online look up these commercials and you will find they beat around the bush to say 'cigarette groups are hiding the fact that smoking is the only cause of cancer' but this is right from one on the home pages of the 'evil' groups "Philip Morris USA agrees with the overwhelming medical and scientific consensus that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema and other serious diseases in smokers. Smokers are far more likely to develop serious diseases, like lung cancer, than non-smokers. There is no safe cigarette." so truth who the fuck is this group that is making these clams? It's simple truth they are just fighting in anger they aren't thinking . They have spent money that could have saved lifes could have helped find the cure for cancer but know they are going to tabacco companys any making big scenes like a two year old that didn't get candy. Smoking causes cancer, no really smokers know this and the ones that don't know are most likley going to die before cancer can kill them. Why, because if you had not learned this you you have to be cut off from the world. Before I go on longer remember this don't cry about something do something to fix it.
