BlackBerry Tears Apple to Shreds -- Figuratively, Anyway

bberry-apple-shot.jpg

Agency Guava threw together this spot in which a Blackberry literally shoots through Apple. (Both are helpfully represented as fruits, and the tagline hypes BB's first-ever touchscreen model.)

Crystal-clear and slightly reminiscent of a long genre of late-'90s films where bullets penetrated human flesh at high-speed, ripping it to ribbons in slow-mo. (We like pulpy shit.) But I wouldn't throw myself behind the current iteration of BlackBerry's Storm for any amount of money, let alone pro-bono.

Office for Mac Schools Us in 'Not-Getting-Caught Feng Shui'

msft-pretend-to-work.jpg

This short film on pretending to work was put together entirely on Microsoft Office for Mac -- which is more than what we can say for Crispin's "I'm a PC" campaign.

It's a fun little watch, loaded with sneaky new tips for feigning productivity while rehashing stuff you probably already do -- like keeping that Excel spreadsheet just within easy toggling distance.

We much prefer iWork, but MSFT Office for Mac does have its merits. Props to the magical, miraculous Krystalline Armendariz for taking it upon herself to share a few. To support her, pass the YouTube link around.

Cathay Pacific Goes Video for Hong Kong Rugby Sevens

CathayPacific_Logo.jpg

Cathay Pacific has teamed with the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens to hype the event at which teams from all over the world will compete at the Hong Kong Stadium March 27-29. The promotion aims to add some humor to how participating countries prepare for the event. And, yes, there's a consumer-generated effort where people can win tickets to next year's event. Here's how it works:

Cute Community Manager + Robust Social Site = Panasonic Playground

panasonic_living_hd.jpg

Panasonic, with help from Crayon, has launched Living in HD. In a promotional video on Facebook, LiHD community manager Kate Dickman highlights the reasons for joining which include "meeting cool, new people [like her], uploading your pictures and videos and getting comments on them."

The site is also a place to ask questions about Panasonic products and learn about new ones. The big sell, though, is Kate's urging viewers to apply to become an LiHD Family which, much like the Nikon blogger outreach program, will give a bunch of Panasonic products to people to try out, share with others and offer feedback.

On Living in HD, there are hundreds of videos from both regular people and Panasonic describing various products, which ones might be best for you and how to get them installed. It's, as the tagline say, "your HD playground."

Hardee's Crowdsources Little Thickburger Campaign

hardees-ex-trophy.jpg

Remember those Little Thickburger commercials from last year? Riffing off that, Hardee's launched an ad generator app so fans could create their own Thickburger comparisons.

The company expected maybe one or two to shine, but it turns out about 16 spots turned out to be broadcast-quality. (Though when you think about it, it's a pretty tough formula to screw up: [Big thing. Little thing.] Extra points for wordplay.) See them here.

"And we didn't even offer them a million dollars. Or anything for that matter," Hardee's added, puffing its chest out for extra effect.

Pepsi Wishes Everyone A Happy Valentine's Day

pepsi_valentines.jpg

Some people love Valentine's Day. Some people hate it. Some brands pay hipster musicians to make Valentine's Day messages that riff off their billboard campaign. Others don't. Which category Pepsi falls into is unknown but, hey, does it really matter?

For those who love Valentine's Day? Happy Valentine's Day. Knock yourself out.

For those that don't, there's always Hotel for Dogs...or the dump.

Former President Bush Appears in Doritos Crash the Super Bowl Ad

bush_pretzel.jpg

Yes, the Super Bowl is Over. Yes, all those Doritos ads seem to have garnered all the love they'd hoped to achieve. And, yes, there are still a lot of consumer-generated Crash the Super Bowl commercials floating around. Here's one from Lavirale which makes fun for former President Bush's relationship with pretzels.

It's pretty clear why this one wasn't chosen for Super Bowl airing. Or why it's not even listed as a contender on the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl site.

twipple: Making Twitter a Kinder, Gentler Borg*

twipple-thumb.jpg

Twitterite @Floyd Hayes decided we need another feel-good meme in our lives, so he invented twipple, a microblogging cross between Simon Says and Pay it Forward.

Once a critical mass starts following @twipple, the latter will deploy "short, fun, positive tweet instructions to do something kind in public," like smile at a stranger, give money to a street musician, or whistle your favourite tune. You can also make up your own and send them via DM or email twipple2009 [at] hotmail.com.

YouTube as Casual Gaming Platform?

youtube-street-fighter.jpg

On this especially idle morning, @tim_nolan invited us to partake of YouTube Street Fighter, brought to you by Patrick Bolvin.

Give it a whirl. The game enables you to interact by sending you to a new video every time you take an action, like picking a character or choosing to kick or block.

It's a fractured and disjointed experience, and you'll probably only play it once, but it brought to mind that Wario Land: Shake It! thing and reminded us that even when you think you know a medium, some innovative mind will turn it into something totally different -- opening opportunities for both the medium to evolve, and for creatives to take advantage.

Guard Your Loins! This Video Will Gay You

gay-alpha-thumb.jpg

Responding to political insinuations that homosexuals "effectively advertise, glamorise and recruit people" to their lifestyle, a handful of creatives used their downtime to develop a tongue-in-cheek recruitment campaign for la vie en gay.

"The Gay Alphabet" is all Sesame Street-inspired eightiesness, cheerfully ticking down an alphabetical list of all the things that WILL MAKE YOU GAY. So yeah, that one time you went out in chaps and confessed to loving Kylie Minogue to a dude who later grabbed your ass? That marked your fall into Sodom -- and one day you will learn to love it.
